Spring is here, and if you have dogs, you know what means – FLEAS.

Ugh. The very thought makes me start itching.

I don’t know of anything that’s more frustrating. They annoy your babies…they annoy you…they multiply like crazy…they bite…they cause all sorts of skin irritations – they’ve got to GO.

But how do you get rid of them? If you give your babies chemicals, there are all sorts of adverse reactions that they can have from allergies & rashes to seizures & death (not to mention how it can affect you, your other pets & your children). In 2008, over 44,000 reactions presumed to be tied to spot-on (topical) products were reported by pet owners, veterinarians and other animal caretakers. Whether it’s topical or a pill, you’re inundating your furbaby with toxic chemicals when you don’t have to.  You’re essentially feeding them or rubbing INSECTICIDE on them. It’s poison.

Just a few of the ingredients in your average topical or pill are imidacloprid (which is an insecticide), fipronil (another insecticide), permethrin (hmm, another insecticide), methoprene (you guessed it) and pyriproxyfen (do I even have to say it?).  Still not convinced that this stuff is DANGEROUS for your babies? And I KNOW as a responsible pet owner that loves your pet, you’d NEVER want to intentionally poison them. Sadly, some of our vets are under the same influence as some of our doctors – Big Pharma. All they know to do is push pill after pill after topical solution after topical solution. It’s all “safe”, according to them. But the truth is, IT ISN’T. Stop the madness!

Here’s the good news – you don’t have to expose your pet to these toxins. You can SAFELY and EFFECTIVELY give them flea prevention that will not put them at risk. I know this to be true because last year, the fleas were INSANE in our backyard. My poor girls were scratching and scratching until I finally started to put a little liquid concoction in their food.  And within a few days, the scratching stopped. I went from picking off 10+ fleas a day to finding NONE. It was wondrous. We were gloriously flea free all summer.

Before I give you the super simple recipe, there are other things you can do, too. Make sure that your babies are eating quality – preferably ORGANIC – food. This will discourage fleas (& other ickies) from biting them because a healthy immune system will make your dog less tasty to them. (Fleas are very attracted to pets that eat a high amount of grains since it makes them quite “yeasty.”) You can also treat the yard with diatomaceous earth or with this Mosquito Barrier. There are essential oils that you can use either in a spray or on the dog’s collar that will keep fleas at bay, too. Do a quick search on Google – there is so much out there that you can try. You don’t need poison!

My girls get organic food & treats and are bathed & brushed regularly. They also get 1/4 tsp of this mixture in their evening food:

1 clove of garlic, 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar and 1 Tbsp of lemon juice. Mix in a saucepan with 1 cup water. Bring barely to a boil to infuse the water, cool, strain & put in a glass container to keep in the fridge. 1-20 pound dog – use 1/4 tsp…20-80 pound dog – use 1/2 tsp…80+ pound dog – use 1 tsp in food bowl each day. *Note* Do not give to puppies until they are at least 10-12 weeks old.

Give it a couple weeks. What will happen is that the scent will begin to come out of their skin. Don’t worry – YOU won’t smell it, but the fleas WILL, and it will discourage them from getting on the animal because they can’t stand the smell. Your baby will suddenly NOT be their favorite snack!

** Read this ** – THE GARLIC WILL NOT HURT YOUR PET. I can’t believe the amount of misinformation that is ‘out there’. I suppose if you fed your dog TWO HANDFULS of garlic all at once, it might affect them, but you’re not doing that. Garlic is very healthy for them. After you read these articles, if you are STILL not comfortable with the garlic for whatever reason, just omit it and use the apple cider vinegar and the lemon juice. It might take a few more days to start to repel the fleas, but it will be SO much better than poison! Your babies will thank you!

It’s THAT time again. You can’t drive past a drugstore or grocery store without seeing “get your flu shot here” signs everywhere. And now, they even have shingles and pneumonia shots…just in case you don’t get enough toxins with the flu shot.

I hope you know by now that the flu shot, in particular, is worthless. Please read my other blog about it here – https://healthylifeharbinger.wordpress.com/2010/10/29/cough-drops-flu-shots-the-cold-facts/.

But, with ‘cold season’ around the corner, you do want to build up your immune system. The way to do this is NATURALLY, not with toxic chemicals. There are a few ways to do it, but this is my favorite. It’s also the quickest and simplest.

All you need are 3 ingredients, and you can find them all at your local ‘real food’ store. (It’s not ‘health’ food. It’s REAL food.)

Apple cider vinegar (with the ‘mother’ inside), oil of oregano and colloidal silver. That’s it. (See below about the manuka honey. I used to try to add it in to this mixture, but it didn’t dissolve very well. I just eat a spoonful every day now.)

In a shot glass (or equivalent), put in 2 dropper fulls of of colloidal silver, 1-2 drops of oil of oregano and a splash of ACV. Then add about 1 oz of alkaline water (which you can also get at a real food store) or orange juice (my favorite) and stir. (Or, put it in a small container with a top and shake it to mix.)

It will taste VERY strong – I actually use milk or yogurt as a ‘chaser’. My other half loves it; he can drink it as is.

Regardless of how you drink it, it is a potent concoction that will not only build up your immune system naturally, but it will also fight any sort of bug that you get. Drink it when you feel fine. Drink it when you start feeling sick. Either way, it will work wonders.

How do I know? From personal experience. For years, I’ve had these random bouts of vertigo (BPPV). They lasted a day. Sometimes they lasted a few days. They would hit randomly; once every year or two. (A couple of years ago when a bad spell hit, I went to 4 doctors with it. The ENT found nothing. I had an MRI done. Nothing. I had blood work done. Nothing.  None of them could find anything, so the last one threw a Zpack of antibiotics at me. I STILL have issues from that poison. Do not rely on ‘doctors’ to figure out what is ailing you.)  Just recently, after more in-depth research, *I* discovered that what was causing those episodes was a virus attacking my inner ear. The last time one of these spells hit me was a few months ago. I was useless for about 4 days before I finally got smart. I knew the 3 ingredients in the shot were powerhouses of health on their own, so I decided to combine them and see what happened.

I did 4 shots the first day. Within 24 hours, I felt a noticeable difference, but I did 4 more shots the second day for good measure. The vertigo was gone, and I felt great.

My other half felt typical ‘cold’ signs coming on not long ago. He immediately started doing shots, and within a couple of days, he had no symptoms of being sick. He caught it before it could start.

Let’s briefly look at each ingredient –

Apple Cider Vinegar – This is a gem. It is good for EVERYTHING, no exaggeration. Just do a quick search on Google, and you will find zillions of pages about the health benefits. Regardless of how you use it, always make sure it is diluted in something. Also, make sure you buy vinegar with the ‘mother’ in it. The mother contains yeast and other fermentation by products that are beneficial. Many companies filter them out, but that’s not what you want. The cobweb-like substances in your vinegar are GOOD. Think of it like kombucha. ACV is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral. The acetic and malic acids help the body process nutrients and increases their absorption. The list of benefits is endless.

Oil of Oregano – This is POTENT stuff. When you use it, you measure by DROPS. Like Manuka honey, oil of oregano is a natural antibiotic. It’s an antihistamine and kills bacteria, fungus, yeast, parasites and viruses. Make sure your oil is coming from one of two sources – thymus capitatus or origanum vulgare. 

Colloidal Silver – When I mention this to people, most do not fully understand what it is. (I didn’t, either, until I read up on it years ago.) CS is simply a mixture of extremely fine sub-microscopic particles of pure silver suspended in water by a positive electric charge on each particle. (When you use it, you’ll see it just looks like water; no odor or taste.) Unlike other metals, silver is non-toxic to the human body. Like the other two, CS has been around for centuries. It’s original medicine. I bet you didn’t know that CS was the antibiotic of choice PRIOR to the 1930s when the FDA was created (and money and pills began to rule the medical world). DO NOT fall for the lies that you will find about CS turning people blue. This is impossible. When you find information like that, please understand that that is false information planted by people in the back pockets of Big Pharma.

You can add to this mixture, as well – Manuka honey, cayenne (my personal favorite dry pepper spice), cinnamon and/or black seed oil (black cumin oil). There are other ‘immune system building’ concoctions, as well, but that’s for another post. (I often add a splash of orange juice.)

And as trivial as this might sound, WASH YOUR HANDS. The majority of germs is spread by our hands. We touch door knobs and handles and then pass by food somewhere, mindlessly picking it up and eating it. The germs lingering on our fingers are passed onto the food and then ingested.  If you work at an office, be extremely mindful of treats sitting around. Do not grab and go. Stop and wash!
